Grant Magazine is in its sixth year of operation, serving as the journalistic publication for Grant High School and the Grant community. Grant Magazine has two outlets to inform the community: a 36-page, full-color print edition that gets distributed once a month during the school year; and this website, where we feature our stories, photographs and multimedia packages. We are entirely student run. The advisor for our publication is a volunteer and we are fully funded through independent donations and subscriptions from the Grant community.
The magazine’s purpose is simple: We tell the stories of the community. We pride ourselves on not writing the typical, basic high school journalism stories that often drift toward the opinions of a select few. Rather, we cover the stories that tap the pulse of our community. They are about the students, the faculty and staff, the administrators, the workers, the volunteers, the families who make Grant High School great.
Our mantra? Everyone has a story to tell.
By telling these stories, the student journalists expand their own perspectives and build bridges between students, staff and others. In doing such journalism, we strengthen and improve the community we cover.
Who we are
Students are selected for this college-level class through an application process that includes an interview with the instructor and the previous year’s editors. Most of the students show expertise in writing and reporting; others focus on photography, page design and web development. Seniors in the class receive eight hours of Portland State University credit for the year. Juniors and sophomores are also in the class, as are select freshmen who show they have the ability to succeed.
We set high standards at Grant Magazine. For three years in a row, 2014, 2015 and 2016, we received a Gold Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. We’ve also earned a variety of local and national high school journalism awards. We set out to improve the way news is covered at Grant. We think we have a good thing going. But our readers should know that we’re committed to excellence and we strive to improve with every story. Read Grant Magazine. Watch us grow. Offer us ideas. Our goal is to reflect and explore the entire Grant community.
