Fist bump, high five, elbow bump and a slight smile: this three-second routine has become integral to Grant High School spirit. In the halls of Grant, Archer Wolfe is single-handedly responsible for countless small acts of connection. Wolfe is a junior and part of the Intensive Skills Classroom (ISC) at Grant. Despite his popularity around school, an undiscovered version of Wolfe exists, unseen by most of his peers: When he’s not on campus, Wolfe holds sole dominion over arcade leaderboards across the city. The moment he steps into the red booth, lights flicker, and the unmistakable “Jurassic Park” T. Rex roars to life on screen. It’s showtime — and a new version of Wolfe takes the stage. Wolfe started regularly attending Electric Castle’s Wunderland, a well-known video arcade in Southeast Portland, in 2020. He quickly found his favorite activities: battling through “Halo,” setting new records in “Transformers” and, most of all, diving into “Jurassic Park.” He first played the games with his family, but as he gained independence and confidence in the arcade environment, he developed a preference for going by himself. As the years went on, his video game talents and grasp of the Portland video arcade scene expanded significantly. Wolfe became a regular at several local arcades, including K1 Speed and other Wunderland locations, where his reputation spread, along with his dominance on the leaderboard. He has created familiarity and close relationships at gaming venues across Portland. Wolfe remains an integral part of the arcade community, warmly welcomed and known by staff members and fellow regulars alike. Wolfe’s exceptional performance is showcased not just in the first-place slot but, more times than not, by dominating the entire leaderboard of his favorite games. Many top score displays are filled with sets of six repeating letters: A-R-C-H-E-R. Generally, Wolfe can get through the entirety of the “Jurassic Park” game in “a single swipe,” costing him just a couple of dollars to run through nine levels and about 45 minutes of gameplay. “I like it ‘cause it’s fast,” Wolfe says. He has become an expert at the game and can find every special power-up and booster without fail. It’s not simply technical skill that sets Wolfe apart from other players, but the dedication and passion he has for the games. Similarly, his successes don’t simply lie in the numbers; his impact and inspiration in the video arcade community are what’s truly admirable. Jeff Wolfe, his father, expresses profound pride in his son’s achievements – both in the arcade and the halls of his school. “This is his way of connecting with everybody. And I’ve seen it, because I’ve taken him to some of the dances. Just this last dance, everybody coming up to him and fist-bumping him, brings tears to my eyes,” he says. Grant Speech Pathologist Tristan Trotter and ISC staff member Lili Pierce have also followed Wolfe’s journey. Neither of them had heard of his talents in the video arcade world until a parent of Wolfe’s classmate sent in a message highlighting his skills. “None of us knew that Archer was a ‘Jurassic Park’ arcade game pro,” says Trotter. “So it was fun to learn about another one of his (interests) that I had no idea about.” From small gestures that brighten school hallways to the mastery and dedication it takes to command a leaderboard, Wolfe’s journey exemplifies that excellence can take many forms. In both worlds, Wolfe sets a new high score for bravery and determination every day — reminding Grant students and Portlanders alike what it means to lead with heart and bring joy to others.
