This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
Grant High School calculus teacher Ray Tate is looking for a kidney donor to aid in the treatment of his rare kidney disease.
His condition, called IgA Nephropathy, often worsens over time and, in Tate’s case, has led to a complete loss of kidney function. Tate writes in a Google document shared online via Facebook, Instagram and Email, that he has known about his disease for 20 years, but it has recently grown worse. Due to its toll on his health, Tate has had to stop teaching to pursue “at-home hemodialysis treatments,” which keep him alive, but restrict his ability to pursue what he loves, including teaching.
Tate is currently on a waiting list to receive a kidney donation from a deceased donor, where he expects to remain for at least five years.
A living donor, he writes, would greatly speed up the process, and provide a more effective kidney than a deceased donor. Tate encourages anyone interested in donating to contact his daughter, Lael Tate.
