What were your thoughts coming into high school?
“I was most excited to be starting high school. I remember I had cut my hair really short. I figured, ‘Hey, I’m changing schools, getting a little older, maybe I should start new for high school. Now I look at it and I’m like, ‘Why did I cut my hair?’ I’ve become a lot more confident with my body. Before, I went to a private school and we had to wear the same thing every day. I never felt comfortable in skirts, so I always had to wear the khaki pants and even then I felt like a frump girl. That kind of followed me freshman year.”

How do you think you have changed since this photo was taken?
“I was really tired the first day before picture day. My friend and I decided it would be good to have a sleepover and stay up all night. That was my first all-nighter. That was me looking exhausted and it wasn’t a good idea. I’ve gotten about 42 percent more artsy. Freshman year, I would doodle in my notebook. But I started filling up a sketchbook sophomore year and doing all the art classes. Now I’ve filled up like two-and-a-half sketchbooks in just this senior year. I’m definitely going to continue to do art as I go through life, even if it’s not as a profession.”

What was your most memorable moment at Grant?
“When the track got fixed, it was very mind-blowing. I didn’t think I would be at Grant to see that happen. They started doing it my sophomore year. I run track and I want a nice track to run on, and what we had was nothing that you could get better on. I like running, period. I like staying active. I just like the
competition.”

What has been your favorite part about high school?
“Senior year, Mr. Medley’s class in AP Physics. I have a free seventh period, so I often go in there. He’s teaching a class, but I go in the back room where the computers are and I just work there and whenever he’s available we do problems. I did an internship the summer after my junior year, with (the Bonneville Power Association). At the time, I used physics concepts in electricity and magnetism, and just learning how to use that in a real world scenario was really very cool.”
Robert Brooks, 18
What was your first reaction to Grant?
“I just remember thinking there were so many people. I couldn’t get over that, like flooded halls, crowded everything and people – so many different kinds of people. I was excited by that, but I didn’t talk to any of them. When I was that age, I really thought high school was a bigger deal than it is. For me, I just learned to be myself in a place this big and find people that you can really connect with.”
